**REMINDER**: New members who have not yet paid dues must do so by midnight TONIGHT, Sunday, in order to be eligible to vote.
Dear Democrats,
What follows are photos and statements from each of the announced candidates for our board positions. Remember that anyone can announce their candidacy for any position up to (and including) election night. We urge people to still consider running for positions -- please, contact Jarret or Indira as soon as you so decide (you will receive some important information including dues-paid lists). Also, some of the losing candidates may "drop down" to run for election to other positions.
Please come out to our elections and vote! To vote, you must be a dues-paid member of the organization. If you have never paid dues before, you have until Sunday at 11:59pm to do so. Dues are $10 (or $15 with our Obama shirt) and can be paid online through PayPal or by contacting Raul. If you have paid dues previously, you can pay up until the start of elections.
Elections will be held on Wednesday, November 19th in Harvard Hall 201; doors open at 7:30, and you MUST be there by 8:00 sharp in order to vote. Hope to see you then!
The Member-at-Large program of the Harvard Dems is unique among campus groups. It provides members of the organization the opportunity to get more involved, gain recognition for their achievements, and assume greater leadership of the organization outside of the executive board. MALs are expected to be highly involved in one particular committee or with one particular project of their own initiative. We will still expect MALs to participate in program-wide activities, but we hope to give MALs the opportunity to gain a great deal of experience and take ownership of a more specific area of responsibility.
The Harvard College Democrats would like to wish everyone a fantastic summer!
Be sure to stay up-to-date with what is happening in Democratic politics this summer by reading our blog, DemApples, as well as our online magazine, the Blue Line. Returning undergraduates, be sure to keep in touch with your friends in the Dems through our interactive summer map.
Over the summer, this website will be undergoing some construction, but we will be ready to mobilize the Harvard campus and beyond to elect a Democrat to the White House come early September!
Seniors, click here to fill out our senior survey!
Finally, we are excited to welcome a new class of committed Democratic activists to campus, and look forward to getting them engaged in progressive politics this fall.
Your friends, The Harvard College Democrats
Come join the Harvard Dems at the CDM Convention, this Sunday, April 6th, at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA.
Email Jarret at president@harvarddems.com for more information.
This Thursday, join us to elect our new Executive Board for the 2007-2008 year! Doors will open at 6:30 PM on Thursday, November 15, in Starr Auditorium in the Kennedy School of Government -- we CLOSE at 7 sharp, after which voting will proceed, so please be on time.
In order to vote, you must be a current dues-paid member. The deadline to become a new dues-paid member has already passed. If you have paid dues in the past, you can pay dues up until the beginning of elections. If you plan to pay dues in person on election day, please arrive early. Otherwise, you can pay dues ($10) online, right here.
Any dues-paid member may be nominated to run at elections, but following are the candidates who have declared their intention to run for board positions (which will be decided in the following order):
Come to the general meeting, 8 PM in EMERSON 305, and maybe you'll be as cool as this guy! Isn't this guy cool?

Committees as normal -- plus LegCom meets Tuesday nights 8 PM in Loker, and FiCom meets Thursday at 7 (this week only) in Grays 1. See everyone at the meeting!
Note that due to Columbus Day (a celebration of dubious political correctness, I might add), our meeting has been shifted to Tuesday night in HARVARD HALL 102/103. That's in the Yard if you don't know it.
Committees will meet as usual, though LegCom will be having its hourlong discussion meeting right after the 1st committee rotation at 9 PM. So see you Tuesday night for THRILLS, MERRIMENT, and DEMOCRAT-NESS! (...Democratism? Democratitude? I'm struggling here...)

At general meetings, we generally meet. In EMERSON 305. What else is new?

It is with the utmost sadness that we learned of a great loss in the Harvard Democrats family: Joey Hanzich, former Dems Vice President and Harvard class of 2006, passed away over the weekend. Those who knew him were struck with confusion and despair at the news. He was a wonderful person, brightening the lives of everyone he met with his infectious smile and selfless service.
Joey was a friend to all and a mentor to many in the Dems. He was one of the smartest and most talented people I have ever known, and would have done amazing things with his life, but I think he will be remembered most for his unique ability to connect with people. He was incredibly kind and genuine, and touched so many lives in his short time with us. He will be missed tremendously.
--Brigit Helgen, Dems president ‘06-’07
Joey was truly the face of the Dems during his time at Harvard. We can all remember him marching over to the bus at 7 AM in the morning to trek to NH to campaign for Kerry, full of energy when we all longed to be back in our warm beds. The "Conversations with the Candidates" series that Joey spearheaded, which brought all the 2004 presidential primary candidates to Harvard's campus, has become a Harvard Democrats tradition, and the Members-At-Large program that Joey managed is thriving because of him. The list of Joey's accomplishments in the Dems goes on, but it will be the kindness and caring he showed to every member that will be missed most.
I first met Joey a few days after my father had a heart attack freshman year. When he heard, Joey introduced himself to me after a meeting to ask how I was doing, and later emailed to ask about my father's recovery. At the time, I wondered why someone I barely knew had taken such an interest, but I would come to learn through the years that that was just who Joey was: someone who cared for everyone, regardless of whether he'd befriended them yet. This concern for others made him a great leader of this organization and a friend to all who joined it, and would have driven him to achieve many more great things in his life.
I often said that one day we would all be working for Joey. While we have been cruelly denied that opportunity, I can say with equal certainty that on all days we will work to honor the causes he cherished and the life that he began.
--Greg Schmidt, Dems president ‘04-05
Over the coming days and weeks, we will be organizing a memorial service in his honor. For more information, please contact Brigit Helgen at bhelgen@fas.harvard.edu.
Our deepest regards go out to Joey's family and friends, and we know that he will live on in both the work of the Harvard Dems and in the hearts of those he was close to.

Join us in beautiful, scenic Emerson 305 (note room change) this Monday night, the 24th. We'll reunite at the General Meeting, then the various committees will begin their various work, just like you remember it -- unless you're a freshman or amnesiac, in which case you probably don't remember it. But that's okay too. We're pro-freshman, and pro-amnesiac.
Come out for the first Dems meeting of the year! Emerson 101, in the Yard. (Map.)
See you all on Sunday...
If you are currently an MAL (click here to check), you are cordially invited to join Brigit and Harlan for an MAL dinner this Saturday, at 6:00, in the Adams Lower Common Room.
They want to hear all your thoughts about the Dems, and the MAL program. There'll be good non-HUDS food, and no board members are invited, so spill everything and all!
If you can, please take a minute to fill out this quick online poll, to give us a starting point for the dinner: http://poll.icommons.harvard.edu/poll/taker/pollTaker.jsp?poll=1-5684-85850.
Thanks, and see you Saturday!
Great Moments in Pennsylvanian Bowling; remixed, because one night I had WAY too much time on my hands. Brigit and Mel's recording career starts now.
Also here is the full 15 minutes of raw audio that was this piece's source material. It's worth a listen.
Learn how YOU can help change the House and Senate in the next two weeks!
* Campaigns for MA Governor, Senate and U.S. House will be discussed *
Monday, October 23, 8pm, Emerson 105
Bring friends! There will be FREE FELIPE'S!!
