  • Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, and David Petraeus all successfully negotiated with their enemies without preconditions, but John McCain still calls negotiation "naive"?
  • John McCain wants to keep spending $10 billion a year on unproven missile defense systems, while Barack Obama will only spend taxpayers' money on missile defense that is proven to protect us?
  • Barack Obama has consistently opposed the Bush administration's saber-rattling towards Iran, while John McCain has joked about bombing Iran?

  • By 2050, under Barack Obama's cap-and-trade plan, greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced to 80% of what they were in 1990?
  • Even the Bush administration's own Energy Information Administration says that offshore drilling, which John McCain supports, won't provide a drop of new oil until 2017?
  • John McCain's only proposal for encouraging the development of lower-emissions cars is a science fair prize for anyone who can develop a better car battery?

2008 Issue Briefing: Health Care

Posted on Sun, 10/05/2008 - 7:11pm by Eva Lam
Did you know that…
  • Barack Obama’s health care plan guarantees that nearly 46 million uninsured Americans, including an estimated 8 million children, will be eligible to receive affordable, high-quality health insurance?
  • John McCain voted against funding an expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) that would have offered health insurance to six million American children?
  • Barack Obama not only supported SCHIP, but would guarantee in his plan that young adults struggling financially and unable to afford health insurance would be eligible to be covered under their parents' plan until the age of 25?
  • John McCain's plan for health care wouldn't even guarantee coverage to John McCain?!
All this and more in LegCom's second 2008 Issue Briefing on Barack Obama and John McCain's positions on Health Care in America. Download it here.

  • John McCain's tax plan offers a $270,000 tax cut to the richest 0.1% of American households?
  • Barack Obama is a strong supporter of the Employee Free Choice Act, which makes it easier for workers to form unions free of employer intimidation?
  • John McCain tried to cancel last Friday's presidential debate in order to attend a meeting in Washington about solutions to the financial crisis - then said nothing for the first 40 minutes of the meeting?

Bilingual Education: Si o No?

When: Tue, Apr 29 at 6:00 pm to Tue, Apr 29 at 7:00 pm

Join us for a passionate debate about a controversial issue that has

Should our public schools adapt by adopting a bilingual sytem of education
that incorporates both English and Spanish? Or is complete English immersion
best for the children? This debate will be moderated by the distinguished
Professor Catherine Snow, Henry Lee Shattuck Professor of Education at the
Harvard Graduate School of Education.

This event is open to the entire Harvard community. Come join us Tuesday
evening at 6pm for food, a debate between the Harvard Democrats and the
Harvard Republicans, and the opportunity to ask each side questions of your
